Maribor Classic

City experience starts at the heart of the old city.

The “Maribor Classic” service is designed as a guided tour around the central streets and squares of Maribor, with an explanation of the major city attractions. The tour includes two stops, namely a visit to the Cathedral bell tower and to the Water Tower vinotheque with tasting of 3 wine samples.

Suitable for

  • First-time Maribor visitors

  • those who would like to rediscover Maribor

  • Mariborians, that are daily passing by

It’s all about

  • town centre, main attractions

  • city throb

  • cultural and natural heritage, wine tradition

  • Guidance takes 2.5 hours and is carried out according to the tour schedule or upon request.

  • Runs in a form of a city walk. The trail is about 1.5 km long. Visitors walk through the old streets and squares of the city centre, climb the Cathedral’s bell tower and visit the Wine Tower wine store.

  • The walk is interactive and includes a variety of heritage interpretation techniques, with an emphasis on storytelling. We bring Maribor closer to the visitor through myths, legends, customs, stereotypes, facts and current affairs.

  • Visitors climb the bell tower of the Cathedral, which provides a bird's eye view of the city, overlooking its rooftops and surrounding wine-growing hills. The history of the bell tower as well as the watchtower are presented.

  • Visitors also visit the pentagonal defence Water Tower that is situated along the Drava River, where a wine store is located. They taste three samples of local Styrian wine with a professional explanation by a level 3 sommelier.

Additional information

  • If you are afraid of the heights or have difficulties moving around and those are the reasons why you refuse to climb the tower bell, we can offer you a substitutional experience. Under the Cathedral the Post Street, which is the liveliest street in the city, is situated, with numerous bars, where you can sit and souk up the urban throb. Vinotheque Le Vino will offer you a glass of exquisite local wine.

  • In case you are not drinking the wine, we can offer you a surrogate; in case you are not consuming alcohol at all, we get you something alcohol-free.

  • As it may exceptionally happen that the bell tower and/or the Water Tower are closed, we provide you with a comparable experience, namely with a visit to two other providers in the city.

  • Corona warning: the entire guidance takes place outside, excluding the path that takes us inside the bell tower to its top; degustation takes place in the street/on the terrace. In case of bad weather, the tasting takes place inside the Water Tower, so we advise you to have a mask with you just in case. The same applies in the case of closure of either of the two buildings mentioned, and in case that the replacement guidance takes place inside any other building.

The Guardroom on the Tower

The Guardroom on the Tower is a permanent museum exhibition located in the church bell tower of the Maribor Cathedral, where a fire observatory once operated as a city protection against frequent destructive fires. At the top of the belfry a mini residence of a fire observer, who warned the townspeople of the danger of fire by striking the bells, was arranged. Visitors climb the 156 steps past the church bells to the museum collection, which depicts a day in the life of a fire observer, and to the outdoor viewing platform, where they can ring the wishing bell from the top of the city, embracing its veduta.

The Water Tower Vinothèque

The Water Tower Vinothèque bids a diverse wine offer of the Podravje Wine Region, where everyone, supported by wine connoisseur expert explanation, can find a suitable taste for themselves. The Vinothèque is located inside the Water Tower, a five-armed late Renaissance fortress, which was built in defense of the Turks in the 16th century on the far corner of the southeastern part of the former city walls. Next to the Vinothèque, in the pleasant shade of the trees, lies a dreamy garden that invites the visitor to stop. In a relaxed ambience, overlooking the Drava River on one side and the medieval walls on the other, you will be pampered with a genuine noble wine drop.

LeVino Wine Bar

On the liveliest street in Maribor, among a bunch of restaurants, cafes and pubs, stands a tiny little wine bar. It is called LeVino, because its story is based solely and exclusively, i.e. only, on wine. You can sit on the street and watch the lively happenings, move into the living room of the bar and observe the happenings on the street through the front window, or move away from the public eye into the covered atrium of the building. For closed circles, there is an 11th century arched wine cellar underneath the wine bar. From the rich wine list, they will offer you a diverse selection of local wines, including their own natural non-sulphuric authorial wines sold under the Bartol brand. The advantage of LeVino is that the customer can try all the wines by the glass.
